Norman Virus Control Reviewer's Comments
We rated Norman Virus Control as a “very good” antivirus program. It passed the Virus Bulletin and ICSA 2007.
This software isn't as user-friendly as some of the top-ranked products and may be difficult for computer novices.
Ease of Use:
Norman Virus Control is more difficult to use because there is no central command center where you can access all the features and components of the program. You have to right-click on the toolbar icon and navigate to the module you need, or choose one of the programs from the start menu.
From the Norman Virus Control Configuration Editor you can customize a number of aspects of the program; however, you can't run scans from the editor, you will need to open a new module.
Effectiveness:
The software passed the VB100% and ICSA 2007, but did not show up on the West Coast Labs level 1 & 2 lists in June of 2007.
Updates:
Norman's updates are just a click away with the Internet update tool. You can choose to get updates automatically at a set time, or you can manually update your program. It is also possible to update your program from a CD if you don't have an Internet connection.
On average, Norman comes out with new virus definitions on a daily basis.
Feature Set:
Whenever you receive a file during a session in MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger, Norman Virus Control will scan the file. If NVC finds a virus, it will tell you that the file contained a virus, worms, etc., and remove/quarantine the infected file.
The software scans outgoing and incoming email and you can include or exclude attachments in the screening. You can also right-click on a file or folder to scan instantly for viruses and adware
The program doesn't display an estimated time of when your scan will be done. It took about 35 minutes for us to scan an 80 GB hard drive.
You can customize Norman Virus Control in a number of ways to fit your needs. Many of the options can simply be checked or unchecked depending on how you want the program to run. You can also create tasks that will repeat or take effect after a particular event occurs.
Ease of Installation:
We didn't have any problems during installation. To use Norman with Windows Vista you need to go to their website and download a free upgrade.
Help/Support:
The program comes with a helpful, context sensitive manual so you can easily get help for the area in which you're working. The company also provides phone and email support-they answered our email within 30 minutes. You can also check out the online forum where consumers discuss a number of antivirus topics.
Summary:
Norman Virus Control is a reliable program that will protect your computer from annoying viruses. It isn't as user-friendly as some of the higher-ranking programs.

CA Antivirus 2007 (8.1)
CA Antivirus Reviewer's Comments
Formerly known as eTrust EZ Antivirus, CA Antivirus is an easy-to-use program that's good for computer novices and does a good job protecting your files and your computer from viruses.
This software doesn't scan for riskware, adware or spyware.
Ease of Use:
The interface uses an Explorer-like file tree that you use to select individual files and folders for scanning. This program is user-friendly with four tab categories. This product is ideal for the average user, but advanced users may find the software has limited advanced features.
Though you can exclude and customize specific files and folders to scan, the software lacks the advanced features that Bitdefender offers.
Effectiveness:
In Virus Bulletin's tests with live viruses CA Antivirus earned the VB100% rating in June of 2007.
CA passed both the Level 1 and 2 tests from West Coast Lab and recieved the ICSA 2007.
The software's compressed file detection is limited and it only scans email when you open an attachment.
Updates:
CA updates their virus definitions on a daily basis. You can choose between automatic and manual updates.
Feature Set:
CA includes a new feature called Snooze that disables the program's real-time protection for a user-specified period-from one to 99 minutes. This is great for new software installations or to troubleshoot a system performance glitch or problem. In previous versions of CA Antivirus (eTrust EZ Antivirus), you had to reboot after disabling virus monitoring. To deactivate Snooze, simply click the Wake Now icon in the System Tray. If you forget, the timer will automatically turn off Snooze after the allotted time and restart the CA Antivirus protection.
CA Antivirus real-time scanner operates like most other AV software and runs in the background without much of a performance hit. CA now also a "quarantine" function for infected, unclean files. This feature is common on many other AV packages.
Ease of Installation:
We didn't have any problems during installation.
Help/Support:
In this new edition, CA offers up to $1,500 in technical service and hardware support if your computer suffers any damage from a virus after Antivirus is properly installed. CA has great support with their support page, Knowledge Base Search and FAQs page. The support team responded to our email within 36 hours. Overall, CA was very helpful through all of our interactions. Unfortunately, the telephone support is quite expensive at $29.95.
Summary:
Anti-Virus by CA is an inexpensive option for protecting your computer. However, the Gold, Silver and Bronze products offer a larger feature set.

AVG Anti-Virus Pro 7.5
AVG Anti-Virus Pro Reviewer's Comments
AVG Anti-Virus has everything you need in an antivirus program: email scanning to include email attachments, boot scanning and auto updating of the virus definitions. From the basic interface, you can quickly do one of three tests: the Complete Test, Removable Media Test and Quick Test.
Ease of Use:
The AVG Control Center (AVGCC) is the main control component of the AVG system. AVGCC runs each time a user logs in and through it you can edit various settings of the AVG system and monitor the status of individual components. The AVGCC system tray icon is multi-colored when all components are working correctly, and turns gray if there is a problem. By clicking the icon, you can open the main the windows of AVGCC.
AVG Anti-Virus also has an Advanced Interface that gives you a nice view of the tests you can run, scheduled tasks, test results and more. This interface is more for advanced users. It takes a little while to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, you will find it logical and easy to maneuver.
Effectiveness:
The software received the ICSA 2007. AVG Anti-Virus also passed on demand and on access scanning level 1 and level 2 from West Coast Labs but did not recieve or enter the VB100%.
Updates:
Akamai servers provide free program and virus updates. AVG updates itself automatically whenever updates are available. Alternatively, you can update manually or configure AVG to download updates at a scheduled time that suits you.
Feature Set:
The Virus Vault is what most anti-virus programs call a "Quarantine" area. When the resident scanners find a virus, you can store the file in the Virus Vault until you have time to heal the file and then restore it to its original location.
AVG Anti-Virus also allows you to create an MS-DOS Rescue Disk from the Control Center.
Scheduling options include alternatives to run tasks even if the schedule is missed. The software can perform tasks even when there is no user logged onto the computer.
Ease of Installation:
This product is very easy to install-no problems.
Help/Support:
AVG Anti-Virus has great support with their online support page, Knowledge Base Search, and FAQs page. Our email inquires were answered within 36 hours. You must register to receive the support and they don't offer support via telephone.
Summary:
The biggest downside to AVG Anti-Virus is it didn't pass the West Coast Lab's level 2 test. For the price, you can find better antivirus software.

Norton AntiVirus 2007
Norton AntiVirus Reviewer's Comments
Norton, a big player in security software, offers competitive antivirus protection. The AntiVirus 2007 suite is easy to use and has extensive security features to protect your PC from malicious programs. Some of this protection includes instant messaging scanning, script blocking and POP3 and SMTP email protection. However, this software doesn’t provide protection from P2P or file sharing transfers.
Ease of Use:
The interface is logical and easy to use. The default settings provide excellent protection against email viruses, SMTP worms and Trojan horses by scanning both incoming and outgoing emails and repairing infected files.
Effectiveness:
The software passed both level 1 & 2 Checkmarks from West Coast Labs. It also passed the OCSA 2007 but did not recieve the VB100%.
Updates:
When you connect to the Internet, this program will automatically detect updates and download them to keep your security current. Updates are available for one year. Staying up–to–date will dramatically decrease the possibility of being infected by a virus.
This version includes a free Vista compatibility update.
Feature Set:
Norton scans file attachments in MSN, AOL and Yahoo applications including IM attachments. The Quarantine feature isolates infected files in a protected area of your hard disk until they are repaired.
In addition to anti–virus tools, the program comes with some great spyware and adware detection tools. It automatically detects and blocks high–risk spyware and adware programs before they are installed on your system.
Ease of Installation:
The Norton AntiVirus 2006 is very easy to install and setup.
Help/Support:
Norton offers support options including email, FAQs and help documentation. Telephone is only offered through their paid support option.
Summary:
Norton Antivirus 2007 provides a formidable defense against common Internet threats. However, we would like to see this product include registry startup protection and technical support by telephone.

McAfee VirusScan 2007
McAfee VirusScan Reviewer's Comments
McAfee is an industry leader in computer protection and VirusScan is their #1 defense against viruses. This software comes with a ScriptStopper, to prevent virus to propagate from one computer to another via email, and WormStopper.
Some downsides to the program are it doesn't provide instant message protection, P2P/file sharing protection or registry startup protection. Check out the Gold product if you're looking for these features.
Ease of Use:
If you use the default settings, setup is a breeze. The default settings provide very good protection against viruses, Trojans, worms, malicious ActiveX controls and Java applets.
The SecurityCenter has several tabs besides the VirusScan tab. There is one for Personal Firewall+, Privacy Service and SpamKiller. These are other programs offered by McAfee.
Effectiveness:
VirusScan boasts one of the best virus detection records. The software received the VB100% award for 2007, the ICSA award for 2007 and passed both level 1& 2 Checkmarks from West Coast Labs.
Updates:
McAfee VirusScan 9.0 automatically downloads updated virus definitions from the Internet on a regular basis. Staying up to date will dramatically decrease any possibility that a virus will infect your computer. On Average, McAfee comes out with new virus definitions on a daily basis.
You will have to register and login to get updates-this makes the process longer than it needs be.
Feature Set:
McAfee VirusScan offers a rich list of features. You can set VirusScan to scan your computer at a preprogrammed scheduled time. The program also scans for spyware and adware.
You can't add several tasks to the Scheduled Scan. This would be a nice quality so you could scan all files once a month and only program files weekly or any other tasks you would like to set up.
McAfee has an Antivirus Emergency Response Team that continually monitors the worldwide virus activities to provide you with the utmost safety. The always-on protection guards against viruses, spyware and other Internet threats that may enter your PC via e-mail, instant message attachments, Internet downloads, and web browsing.
Ease of Installation:
We didn't encounter any problems during the installation process.
Help/Support:
McAfee has plenty of help options, including documentation, email and phone support. We were disappointed with their email response time-it took 5 days to respond and they didn't answer all our questions, hence the low rating.
Summary:
McAfee is a name brand product that does an excellent job at detecting and removing viruses. Their update process can be somewhat tedious and their support department needs to answer their emails in a timelier manner.

F-Secure Anti-Virus 2007
F-Secure Anti-Virus Reviewer's Comments
F-Secure AntiVirus is a user-friendly program loaded with scanning capabilities that will keep your PC secure and safe. This suite provides registry startup protection and screens emails and instant messages-to name just a few of its defensive features.
While F-secure is not a huge system hog, the program does have several processes running that when combined, use more of your system than our top rated products. Nonetheless, the scan time was about average compared to the other high-ranking antivirus programs.

BitDefender 2008
BitDefender Reviewer's Comments
TopTenREVIEWS - Gold Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set
The best line of defense against computer viruses, spyware, hackers and spam is BitDefender 2008, our #1 ranked anti–virus software and winner of “TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award.” BitDefender 2008 is an outstanding product with a user–friendly interface that will scan all existing files on your computer, all incoming and outgoing emails, IM transfers and all other network traffic.
This latest version of BitDefender has a new Gamer Mode feature that minimizes impact on gaming performance so you can play safe. The software still has all of the reliable features for which Bitdefender is known such as “Privacy Protection” for outgoing personal information, “Web Scanning” while you’re using the Internet and “Rootkit Detection and Removal,” which detects then removes hidden virus programs.
BitDefender has also improved their existing B–HAVE feature that runs pieces of software on a virtual computer to detect code that could be an unknown virus. In addition, a setup wizard makes it easy to customize security settings.
We searched the web for the best prices and deals available. Here’s what we found. Right now, when you purchase BitDefender 2008 for $24.95 from online retailer, Herman Street, you also get a rescue CD and extended download FREE.

Ease of Use:
Softwin has covered all of the bases with BitDefender. This comprehensive product has an attractive, easy–to–use design that is consistent throughout the software and the manufacturer’s website. Because it is simple to use and updates itself automatically, you can install it on your system, then practically forget it’s there—an ideal solution for any user.
BitDefender creates a small window called the “File Zone” on your desktop that indicates how many files the program has scanned in the past few minutes. You can also drag and drop files into the File Zone for an immediate scan. The program prepares a report of each completed scan so you know exactly what your files do or do not contain and you can instruct BitDefender to disinfect or remove any infected files or messages.
You can also customize BitDefender’s security settings for features such as AntiVirus, Firewall, Antispam, Antispyware and Parental Control.
Effectiveness:
BitDefender’s customizable settings make the program effective for a variety of users. For example, if you receive legitimate commercial email, you can set BitDefender’s spam filters to allow specific or all emails.
Virus Bulletin rated BitDefender a VB100%, the highest honor for anti–virus software.
The VB 100% logo is awarded to anti–virus products that detect all current “in the wild” viruses during both on–demand and on–access scanning in Virus Bulletin’s comparative tests.
Additionally, BitDefender passed the ICSA 2007—a similar test that certifies the software can detect viruses, prevent virus replication, and doesn’t generate false positives.
Updates:
The live update feature checks for product and virus definition updates at either a user–defined interval, manually or default (every hour). When you do a manual check for updates, you can decide which updates to install. When the software automatically checks for updates, it can update the files immediately or at a specified time that you can determine during setup.
Feature Set:
BitDefender uses the ICSA Labs certified scanning engines, so you can feel secure about their virus protection.
The program creates a summary log of events that shows the last definitions updates, details on any virus the software encounters, the last time you ran a scan, definitions number and more. And new in 2008, Bitdefender has added a Gamer Feature so it won't tax your memory during intense gaming.
BitDefender’s startup guard will tell you if a program is trying to load itself upon start up so you can choose to allow it or not. This software suite also comes with adware and spyware detectors. Though we recommend using an antispyware scanner, as they are designed specifically for this purpose, it is nice to have two programs working towards a common goal, to keep your computer clean.
Ease of Installation:
This product is easy to download from their website.
Help/Support:
When you purchase BitDefender you also receive one year of virus signature and scan engine updates. The manufacturer offers qualified technical support live via the Internet and telephone.
There is also an online database with answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) and they have an email address–they answered our email within 6 hours.
Summary:
BitDefender is easy to use, simple to install, has a great feature set and at $24.95, it won’t break your bank account. Anyone who spends time on the Internet knows the importance of anti–virus software; BitDefender will keep your computer virus–free and running smoothly.

Get real–time monitoring and antispyware protection with Pc–cillin Anti–Virus, this program comes with free email, chat and telephone support and works with all versions of Vista.
Ease of Use:
This program has a straightforward interface that is as easy to use as the Windows Security Center.
Effectiveness:
PC–cillin antivirus software detected and blocked all viruses during our tests. This software also received the VB 100% award, is certified by ICSA and passed the level 1 & 2 Checkmark from West Coast Labs.
Updates:
On average this product is updated daily, although this is enough for most threats, we would like to see more frequent updates. Trend Micro also posts outbreak notices and threat levels so you can stay up–to–date on the newest hazards.
Feature Set:
This security program has protocols for protecting PCs against viruses, worms and Trojan horses as well as spyware, rootkits and malware. It scans incoming files real–time, including emails, downloads and files from portable storage devices. You can also schedule scans, run customized scans or conduct a scan on demand. However, it does not offer P2P file sharing or registry start up protection, but this is not uncommon, of the products we reviewed only BitDefender offers both of these features.
Ease of Installation:
As long as you remove any existing antivirus program before your install, you should not have any problem installing and setting up this program. We had our demo up and running within minutes.
Help/Support:
Trend Micro provides free email, telephone and chat support. They also post information online and include help with the program.
Summary:
Overall, this program performs about as well as its competitors but BitDefender is more affordably priced and Kaspersky, for the same price, scans faster and updates more often.

Kaspersky 7
Kaspersky Reviewer's Comments
Kaspersky also receives a perfect score on our review, passes nearly all of the major virus tests, has hourly definition updates and offers an extensive feature set. This is the “TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award”anti-virus software.
Though Kaspersky ranks very close to the #1 product, we found that BitDefender had one more option, the registry startup protection. And, at $24.95 BitDefender is the better deal.

Ease of Use:
Kaspersky has a very clean and easy-to-use interface. The program is divided with three tabs- protection, settings and support. Within each tab, you can choose from several other functions.
This software is perfect for the average home user and advanced users. For home users, who don't want to get too technical, there is recommended settings and an easy-to-find scan button that will instantly start to scan your computer based on these settings. More advanced users can go into the settings tab and completely customize what they would like the program to do.
Kaspersky comes with three types of scan levels: Maximum - thoroughly scans all files, self-extracting archives, startup objects, disk boot sectors, system memory and email format files. Normal - covers everything the maximum setting covers minus email format files. High Speed - scans everything minus the email format files, archives and startup objects.
Effectiveness:
Like the #1 product, Kaspersky passed the ICSA 2007 and the West Coast Labs Checkmark level 1 and 2 as well as the VB100% in the August of 2007 awards. These awards mean the software detected all of the “in the wild” viruses, generated no false positives, prevented virus replication and disinfected all of the viruses that could be disinfected.
Besides being very thorough and reliable, it only took eight minutes for us to scan an 80 GB hard drive. This anti-virus software is so fast you won't have to set aside hours to scan your computer or set it up to run at night.
Updates:
By default, Kaspersky updates their definitions on an hourly basis, which blows away the competition. This leaves a very small window for a virus to be created and infect your machine. Alternatively, you can configure the program so you can receive automatic updates or you can manually update your program.
Furthermore, the updates will resume if your Internet connection is interrupted, and the cumulative updates, the ones that contain the entire virus database, are only half the size they used to be. The latest version employs a special technology so the program will use already existing anti-virus database for a cumulative update.
Feature Set:
You can choose which files you would like Kaspersky to scan by simply right clicking on the file. You can even select a number of files to scan or just scan your entire computer.
If the software detects a virus there are a number of things you can have the software do. It can just delete the file, notify you that it has found an infected file or log the information for later use.
During each scan, there is an estimated time to finish so you can plan accordingly.
Ease of Installation:
We didn't encounter any problems while installing this program.
Help/Support:
Kaspersky has all of the support you need. There is an email address, an online forum, phone support and a FAQ. They answered our email within 12 hours.
Summary:
Kaspersky is an easy-to-use program for the average person with plenty of customizable options for an advanced user. Just install and set up this software and you'll never have to worry about a virus or worm infecting your computer.

ESET Nod32 2.7
ESET Nod32 Reviewer's Comments
ESET's Nod32 has an excellent virus detection rate earning the VB100% in all eight of its most recent Windows test. This software has a number of practical features to help you monitor your computer's security including outbreak notices and history/report logging. This antivirus software wins our "TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award"and would have placed higher if it were a bit more novice friendly.
The software uses some technical terms in the interface and other areas of the product. Novices may find the higher-ranked products easier to use.
Ease of Use:
We found the Control Center layout and modules a little bit confusing. The terminology is very technical; however, a techie would love the customization abilities and scanning power of Nod32.
Effectiveness:
The most important function of antivirus software is to detect and block viruses, and Nod32 does an excellent job. This software received the VB100% award in June 2007, was certified by ICSA in 2007 and passed the level 1 & 2 Checkmark from West Coast Labs.
Updates:
NOD32 claims that they detected and blocked big-gun viruses like CIH, Melissa, LoveLetter long before the competition. The team in the ESET virus lab is extremely fast and good at analyzing viruses and releasing blocks and fixes. Nod32 updates virus definitions “As Needed.”
Feature Set:
Nod32 is designed for more advanced users with plenty of customization features. Nevertheless we wouldn't discourage the average home user from using this product-it just may take some time to learn everything.
Nod32 has two different ways to run the program. You can run a simple Nod32 scan or you can spend more time using the control center. Within the control center you can have access to tons of customiztion feature and differnet types of scans-DMON, IMON, EMON and more. Here is an overview of the different scans:
* AMON - the resident (running in operating memory at all times) or "on-access" antivirus monitor. This program is the most crucial antivirus defense tool.
* NOD32 (also referred to as the "on-demand" scanner) - this is the scanner executed manually by the user, or automatically by the scheduler.
* IMON - this scanner provides the first line of defense by monitoring Internet traffic (SMTP, ftp, http and other Winsock protocols).
* EMON - the Nod32 Mail Scanner provides protection from email-borne viruses.
* DMON - scans Microsoft office documents and files directly downloaded from Internet Explorerer.
Ease of Installation:
The installation process allows you to do a typical installation, some customization or an advanced install that gives you control over all the default functions. We didn't have any problems with the installation process.
Help/Support:
The program offers helpful documentation in the form of manuals and FAQs. The email support is excellent and they responded to our email within 30 minutes. Additionally, the manufacturer offers 24/7 phone support.
Summary:
Nod32 is a first-rate antivirus program that offers several levels of superior protection. However, the product is somewhat hard to understand because of the technical jargon and wouldn't be our first choice for the average home user.
